Teams Tips

I like personalised and customised hair recommendations like I like my harmless gossip - imparted in an excited tone and accompanied by the kind of facial expressions with a Cheshire-cat-grin that suggests, in no uncertain terms, that this knowledge about this holy grail product might change your life. In my perpetually frazzled state of hair that looks like it’s always in a war-of-attrition with nature, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked down the street or glanced across on a crowded train carriage and thought to myself, “Excuse me, how with the luscious locks?” The number is too high to count. Such is my fasciation with perfectly coiled and slicked-back dos of perfect strangers, and I know I’m not alone. Hair mania is real - not to mention ubiquitous.

There is something about a hair product suggestion dispensed by word-of-mouth from a hairstylist you trust that carries more weight!

To that point, a few members of Team English, whose trustworthiness I can personally attest to, are sharing their all-time favourite hair products. Read their answers and secret tricks below:

TEAM APPRECIATION

The Stevie English team, mask-free and ready for a new era of hair across the inner west of Sydney! Behind the bright and vibrant colours, we’re a loveable bunch of misfits. From the bold and beautiful (bright!), to the soft, flawless and subtle; we do creative colours with aplomb and natural colour with polish, shine and immaculate application.

As the waves of corona pass, a motivated and creatively inspired team emerges, ready to tackle this mask-free hair industry. With new faces working on the floor and the well known senior stylists; our inner west salon is here to cut and colour the Covid-free world.

Our senior stylists have and always will be masters of their art. Stevie, the owner and founder, has been colouring hair for over 27 years and has perfected his aesthetic, technical abilities and reputation to the point of winning Australian Hair Colourist of the Year, along with countless other industry awards. Now the global Colour Creative Director for evo, he’s inspired those in the salon as well as the global community being a national and international educator. Dave, the senior director, is the master of haircuts with a reputation that precedes him. His technical beauty creates the stylish and effortless haircuts he’s known and loved for. He has reached ‘ninja’ status for a reason. Zoe, our director, with 17 years of experience, specialises in colour, precise haircuts and curly hair. She’s a hair expert, perfectionist and creative genius. Sadie, our senior stylist, proficient in all fields with a loyal clientele that come back time and time again for one reason; her consistently immaculate service (she also slays the ‘unicorn’ balayage!). Leanne, another senior stylist that walks the salon floor. A mentor to the apprentices and an immensely talented stylist in all fields, she is responsible for a great deal of the stunning colour work that leaves the salon. Next on the list is a new face, our wonderful stylist Georgie. A master with the clippers and incredibly talented in the world of colour, she leaves her clients with fantastic hair every time.

As well as new faces, we have our new talents! These stylists have recently graduated from their apprenticeships and are ready to leave their mark on the hair industry. Harrison, hair stylist by day and DJ by night. He has devoted himself to his craft and his passion for haircuts is easily seen in his body of work. Harrison’s enthusiasm has not only given him success within the salon, his fashion forward attitude has led to success in the competitive wold of hair. John, our colour-obsessed new talent whose perfectionistic tendencies create immaculate hair that wears like a dream. Our styling expert and rising colour specialist, he’s known for producing brilliant results on even the most difficult hair challenges. These stylists, all extremely talented and extremely passionate wouldn’t be able to perfect their work without the help of our junior team.

Our apprentices and assistants are working hard to develop their skills and aesthetic whilst learning from their senior mentors. Samara, a third year apprentice whose talents grows exponentially with her learning. Three years in, her technical abilities allow for her creativity to shine. Ella, a first year apprentice whose enthusiasm and natural abilities leave the salon team excited for her professional development. Jazz, our youngest in the salon is another first year apprentice with a work ethic and thirst for knowledge that will ensure her success in the industry.

But what would the salon be without the backbones?! Our receptionists and assistants, Mel, Ivy, Edy and Claudia will ensure the clients are comfortable and caffeinated (comfortably caffeinated! )and the stylists capable of producing the best hair imaginable. Last in our team is our salon dog Indi. She is an 8-year-old English Staffy who loves people and the salon just as much as the rest of the Steve English team!

The Stevie English team will leave a mark on the 2021 hair industry. Covid has only strengthened the Stevie English brand and the easing of restrictions has “un-masked” a new wave creativity and passion in our team. We would love for you all to be a part of our salon! Old clients and new are welcomed and the team will focus on nothing less than outstanding hair, as always using our fave two brands evo and K18. We can’t wait to see you at our ‘salon catwalk’, best-feet forward and hips ready to strut. NB. Boots and dancing shoes are not mandatory but highly encouraged.

Out of this world colour

Stevie English Hair have big news!

We are excited to announce that we are the first salon in the world to use evo hue.verse colour. We have been a proud evo salon for a while now, and adopting the full colour range means that we are using ammonia-free, PETA accredited, vegan and fully Australian-owned products for all services in the salon.

hue.verse colour is delivering incredible results as all our clients have come to expect from our talented team. The range partners with our old faves Fab Pro and Staino, and the colour last beautifully with at-home maintenance using evo professional products and KHairpep treatments.

Moving back to an Australian-owned and operated product just feels right, particularly right now. We are stoked about using hue.verse colour!

BLONDE HAIR SPECIALIST SYDNEY

There is no one-size-fits-all blonde, and at Stevie English Hair in Glebe we work hard to create the perfect blonde to suit your needs. We treat hair colour as an art and are highly trained in all techniques including foils, balayage, full scalp powder lightener, root stretch, face frame, bleach slice, you name it we do it. The only limit is your inspiration and the condition of your hair!

We recommend 4 things to keep your hair in great shape between blonde appointments:

1.

Treatments, Treatments, treatments! We use Olaplex to keep your hair strong while we lighten, and at home K18hair will be your best friend! A combination of the two will keep your hair in amazing healthy condition.

K18Hair

K18Hair

2.

Purple shampoo and conditioner to neutralise brassiness and unwanted yellow tone. We use Evo Fabuloso Platinum, and can customise Fab Pro conditioners for any colour.

Magic in a bottle evo platinum blonde toning shampoo

3.

A good hydrating shampoo and conditioner for regular use- evo Therapist is ideal.

4.

If you love your straightening iron, we can still be friends but we recommend taking it easy on the heat styling. Hair is like a delicate fabric- if you iron a silk shirt everyday it would get faded and thread bare, this is what happens to your hair! Use dry shampoo to get longer out of your blowdries and styling

.Keep regular appointments if you can- letting your roots grow out often means a more complicated regrowth correction. If blonde to the scalp is too high maintenance, try a soft root shadow for a more natural grow out.

NO AT HOME LIGHTENING!

We have highly trained colourists at different price points to suit most budgets, and can work with you on a plan. We offer free consultations. We don’t like to quote on Instagram or facebook, as its hard to give a correct quote with out looking and touching your hair.

Best fringes in the Inner-west of sydney

2020 has had society self-reflect and ask existential questions that have plagued humankind in ages past: Are people inherently good? Why does daylight savings exist? Should I get a fringe?

The salon has been seeing an influx of our wickedly cool clients taking the bangs plunge spurred by the persistent need for a small but otherwise dramatic, transformative change.

Whether you call them fringes or bangs, we are loving them right now because in essence, a fringe is a great way of changing your look. Fringes have never been as popular; after a lockdown of close shaves and the ‘hair-larious’ random comb overs we’re now sporting from said shearing adventures, the trend has clearly taken off.

Adjustments.jpeg

Despite the more mainstream bangs look (think Alexa Chung circa 2009), fringes do indeed come in all shapers and sizes; short, fat, heavy, textured, round and oval. At the end of the day, a fringe can be extremely flattering and should frame and focus.
In fact, we offer free fringe trims between your appointments (provided you have another appointment rebooked) for maintenance. We’re all aboard the bangs-bandwagon here at Stevie English!

CLOSED - Due to COVID-19

We made the decision last Wednesday to close our salon for the safety of our staff and clients.

It’s impossible to maintain social distance in our industry and we have prioritised health.

We will be back when it is safe for our team to work, and believe us when we say we will be ready!

We are working on new ways to help you with your hair during this closure so stay tuned, stay safe and stay home!

We will be back

Make your hair happy and repair it this summer

Summer is here- and this means serious heat, surf and unfortunately smoke everywhere and your hair is probably feeling it.

In Australia our UV index is usually very high and out hair cops it more than in most other countries. That’s why we recommend great haircare for home use, because like your skin, your hair needs daily maintenance and protection.

Here at Stevie English Hair in Sydney’s inner-west our favourite treatment by a country mile is KhairPep

KhairPep Masque

KhairPep Masque

KhairPep leave-in Masque is a transformative, restorative intensive therapy treatment that repairs the hair from the inside. It strengthens, improves elasticity its the hero of treatments.

We recommend using a small amount at least once a week after shampooing an towel drying (no conditioner) and waiting 4 minutes before blowdrying.

KhairPep Serum

KhairPep Serum

Khairpep leave-in serum is a powerful and light weight serum that repairs, strengthens and improves the elasticity of the hair, and  adds volume to fine fragile hair.

KHairpep combined with a Bond/Plex technology strengthens your hair and helps its ability to combat environmental toxins and the effects of lightening or colouring your hair .

How to pick a Hair Salon: Stevie's 5 tips

Have you ever moved cities, towns or even countries? Apart from finding somewhere to live and working out where to local amenities are like the supermarket and pub you also need to find services like your local GP, dentist, and of course (and most importantly!) your hairdresser. This can sometime be the most traumatic selection! Who should you trust? How do you find someone who will do your hair, just how you like it? What if they do a botch job and you have to live with bad hair for weeks!!? So here are my top 5 tips to finding a hairdresser to suit you.

1. Work out what you want

Source: google.ca via Ivana on Pinterest

There are a huge range of hairdressing salons out there. Barber shops, walk-in places that just do cuts for a bargain price through to top end fashion driven celebrity hairdressers. It all depends on your budget, the look you are going for and how close by you need them to be. Working out what you want first up is pretty important. If you are low fuss and just looking for a trim every 6-8 weeks a walk-in joint might be perfect. If you like an "experience", a little more TLC, professionally trained hairdressers, beautiful surrounds and want to feel really special when you leave well, come on in to Stevie English Hair. We'd love to look after you!

2. Check out the Salon

Chances are they are a few salons in your local area. Why not go for a wander past each one and check them out?

Is the salon generally clean and tidy? Are the windows clean? Is the floor swept of hair? A tatty dirty salon does not give the confidence that they will pay attention to the little details when doing your hair.

Do the staff take pride in their appearance? Chances are if they care how they look they'll care about how you look.

Does the salon look relatively modern? This is certainly not the most important aspect but it may give you a clue that they like to keep up with other things.  This could include; the latest techniques for colouring, cutting and keeping up education for the staff.

Does the salon have a good vibe or culture? Does it seem like a happy place? Happy employees do a good job.

3. Get a recommendation

Is there someone you work with who has fabulous hair? Do they have an immaculate cut? Is there hair colour inspired? Beg them for their secret and hopefully they will reveal a wonderful hairdresser. Maybe you have seen someone on the street or in the local coffee shop who's hair is fab. Give them a compliment and ask if they would mind sharing their hairdressers name? Ask your friends who does their hair or get on social media. Twitter is great for sourcing the best recommendations from across the web.

4. Are they willing to talk?

I don't mean will they tell you their life gossip while you are trying to read the latest fashion glossy while they blow-dry your hair...I mean, are they willing to give you a consultation about your hair before they touch a strand on your head? This should take into account what you are looking for and also what they recommend depending on your hair type, face shape and lifestyle. Are they willing to do this with no obligation of payment? Are they willing to talk about the various options including the price, so you don't get a rude shock at the register? Hairdressing is a people profession and the relationship they build with you is as important as the hair they do.

5. Do they keep you waiting?

Ever been to the salon, excited about getting your hair done, and looking and feeling great? Of course. Ever been to the salon and had to wait? And wait. Now sometimes things go wrong, staff get sick and the wheels can fall off, the same as any business but it's how you get treated when this happens that makes the difference. If you have arrived on time for your appointment and not been acknowledged or had to wait for 30 mins or more, perhaps they don't deserve your service?

Once you are happy with all these tips, take the plunge and give the new hairdresser a go!

Obviously we want to do your hair. But there are so many great salons out there! Good hunting. Here is a little blog about why we might be good!
