Why Good Hair Colour Costs What It Does

Let's address it directly — professional hair colour is expensive. And if you've ever winced at a bill at the end of a long colour appointment, you're not alone.

But here's the thing. You're not paying for an hour of someone's time. You're paying for a lot more than that, and it's worth understanding what.

You're paying for expertise that took years to build

Your colourist didn't walk out of school knowing how to take dark hair to blonde without it snapping off. That knowledge comes from years of training, thousands of heads of hair, ongoing education, and a working understanding of chemistry that most people massively underestimate.

Getting colour right — the right formula, the right developer, the right timing, the right placement — is a skill. When it works, it looks effortless. That's not an accident, that's the expertise you paid for.

The products are not cheap

Professional-grade lightener, developer, toner, colour — none of it is the stuff in the box at the chemist. We use O&M, K18, and Olaplex in our services because they're the best tools for the job, not because they're the cheapest option. K18 and Olaplex built into a lightening service isn't a luxury add-on. It's us protecting your hair from the inside out so you can keep doing this for years without it falling apart.

The time is real

A full balayage or colour correction appointment can run three, four, five even 8 hours. That's not padding — that's what it takes to do the job properly. Rushed colour is how you end up with uneven results, scalp damage, or hair that's over-processed and breaks off at the ends. The time is part of what you're paying for.

Compare it to what it actually replaces

A good colour service, maintained properly, can last eight to twelve weeks. Spread that across the year and compare it to the cost of a bad box-dye job, a corrective appointment to fix it, and the bond-building treatments needed to repair the damage. The maths usually lands in favour of doing it right once.

The confidence factor

This one's harder to quantify but ask anyone who's walked out of a great colour appointment how they feel. Hair that looks right — that reflects light properly, sits well, suits your skin tone — changes how you carry yourself. That's not vanity. That's just true.
