The base matters more than the colour

This is the part most people don't think about. Vivid colour — especially pastels and lighter shades — sits on top of the hair rather than penetrating the cortex the way traditional colour does. Which means the base you bring to it completely dictates the result.

A pale, even, well-lifted base? Your vivid colour will be clean, bright, and true to tone. A patchy or warm base? The colour sits unevenly and pulls muddy. This is why going vivid is almost always a two-stage service — lift first, tone the base, then apply the colour. Skipping steps is how you end up with something that looks great in the salon and odd in natural light.

Fading is part of the deal — plan for it

Vivid colours fade faster than natural tones. That's just chemistry — the molecules are larger and sit on the outside of the hair shaft. How fast depends on the colour (reds and pinks fade quickest, blues and greens hang around longer), how often you wash your hair, and whether you're using colour-safe products at home.

The salons that don't tell you this upfront are setting you up to be disappointed. We'd rather you know exactly what you're signing up for so you actually love it six weeks in, not just the day you leave.
