How Big are your Balls?

When I opened the first Stevie English salon, I was aware of the wasteful nature of the industry and I tried my very hardest to do the best I could to be environmentally conscious. I am always looking for ways to implement more sustainable practices in the salons, so you can imagine how excited I was about ReFoil- hairdressers foil made from recycled materials, and fully recyclable. I am completely on board with the ReFoil practice, and am hoping that word spreads throughout the industry. My brainy friends down at Chumba Concept Salons in Melbourne have challenged the Stevie English team to a "foil-off", and naturally I have accepted. We will be battling one stylist a week against a Chumba stylist and having a foil "weigh-in" at the end of each week until Hair Expo. The foil be recycled, sold to a reseller and the funds donated to a charity of our choosing- starting with the Starlight Foundation.

I love this idea, I love a bit of competition and doing my bit for the environment. It's also nice to know that you can visit a salon that uses PPD-free, no-ammonia colour in O&M and also recycles the foil that goes into your amazing head of highlights.

GAME ON!

Surf's up! Surfer Style

So those of you who know me, know I love surfing. I try to surf as often as possible, as the sun is rising. The expectancy of what the day holds. I love the moment, I love Australia. Well  I have just come back surfing with the boys in Indonesia, Sumatra to be exact with Sumatran Surfarriis . (AMAZING)

So I got inspired about the whole surfer lifestyle, and the hair! ( not that my mates have much hair) It's tightly intertwined with the Aussie lifestyle. The sea, the sun and the surf translates to easy, laid back and unpretentious hair.

As summer comes to an end as we move into April and our Australian Autumn, here are my 3 top surfer inspired styles to try and keep that summer vibe alive! ( again me or any of my mates don't  look like these pics, its a loose idea ;))

1. Blonde and Long

This has to be the classic beach babe look. Long layered locks with bleached ends and great texture can take you from the beach to dinner, and is easy to achieve. Wash and condition with O&M's Hydrate and Conquer to keep your hair hydrated when spending lots of time in the ocean. Apply some Atonic Thickening Spritz to add body and dry with the hair-dryer on a cool setting and then using a large barrel curling wand, divide your hair into large sections and add some curl to the mid-lower lengths. Using your fingers roughly rake through some Frizzy Logic. Done.

Another great "Blonde and Long" look with amazing beachy texture. Easy to achieve. Wash, load up with some Surf Bomb and let dry naturally. I love messy hair.

2. Short and ShaggyThese styles look and should, be easy, if the cut is good. For most guys, a towel dry after a surf is all that's needed. The ultimate "surf and wear" cut. For a slightly more held together style, lads just need to add some K-Gravel for some hold and a matt finish.

3. Beachy Braids

Still so cool and so beachy. Braids or plaits are a great way to prevent your hair getting tangled at the beach and they are a bit boho and hip. Why not try some different sized plaits through different size sections of your mane? Or a large relaxed plait is easy and breezy on a hot sunny day.

Jet-lag. Blizzards. Bobby Pins. OriginalMineral. New York.

I could sum up my recent trip to New York Fashion Week in four words. Jet-lag, blizzards, bobby pins and OriginalMineral. It's a crazy dream for any hairdresser to do the "dos" for 10 days of fashion shows, and an amazing achievement for two guys from Sydney and a Aussie grown hair care brand. We rocked it! I'm home, sitting here in my office after the most intense 10 days of my life. I left Sydney with my mate and owner of OriginalMineral and headed to NEW YORK #NYFW #MBFW (see end note). It was the craziest whirlwind I have ever been involved in, where I experienced an Aussie brand that I love, OriginalMineral , also known as O&M, rise to the top.  Unless you have been in a bunker or a 4-year snowstorm, the kind of which hit during #NYFW #MBFW, you would have heard of OriginalMineral by now. A haircare brand created in a hair salon in Sydney, has now established itself as a serious contender on the world stage. O&M is created by hairdressers, for hairdressers, who saw the need to create beautiful products with less chemicals. The co-fonder Alan Buki had problems with main stream hair dyes affecting his skin (as do many hairdressers who often end up leaving the industry because of their reaction to the chemicals in hairdressing products). He and his very clever wife Jose Bryce  Smith set out to rectify the situation and O&M was born. I'm one of the artistic directors for O&M, and I specialise in colour, something O&M are all about. It's colour without harsh chemicals, without Ammonia and without PPD. #winning O&M's product range now incorporates haircare and treatments for in-salon and at home use, styling products and amazing colours for hairdresser use only.

It was O&M's styling range and the energy of Janelle Chaplin, O&M's Creative Director, that took #NYFW by storm. Janelle has a strong unwavering vision for what the O&M brand is about, and that coupled with drive, talent and hard-work produced stunning results. Her work during #NYFW extended from working with designers to having us prepping hair pieces for hours before a show.

My #NYFW #MBFW experience was so much more than a hair thing. I have always dreamed of #NYFW, not because I'm some super stylist who has to go, it's a bucket list thing. Something I should do and experience as a hairdresser. An experience that challenged me, pushed me out of my comfort zone, made me crazy, excited, scared, frustrated and exhausted! Importantly I learnt a lot as a hairdresser and a lot about myself. This was the kind of experience I would encourage all hairdressers to grab with both hands if it's presented to you.

A bit about the shows At Veronica Beard, Jannnelle Chaplin described the look as modern day farm girl who just woke, rolled out of bed and went down to feed the pigs. These girls look a lot better than when I roll out of bed! The hair was fattened up with loads of Rootalicious dried in root to create big hair, and then Fishtail plaits on one side. All models had fake hair to match theirs which helped create the longer messier cowgirl look. The Team used O&M K-Gravel to take any shine but also to create messy dry looking hair.

The first show by CZAR by Cesar Galindo  was held off site and it was afreak show of sorts immortalised in the new show on AMC - It wasn't a runway show but more of art installation. Mixing freaks with edgy clothes and taxidermy. O&M are pushing the boundaries of hair design by mixing cool hair with fashion and interesting subjects.

“This was a collaboration with a freak show, so we want them to look like hot circus girls – a bit clowny, nothing is more scary than clown!” says Janelle.

“First we applied Rootalicious  all over dry hair to create the foundation and give us something to work with. Using small tongs on small hair sections, we created a pretty curl - a floaty, candy texture opposed to the more aggressive texture we created last year with O&M ribbon. Next, we brushed out the curl and creating a matt-wet finish – some of the girls then had their hair threaded at the back to create an overzealous bob-type style.”

The next show with CZAR by Ceasar Galindo, was at the Lincoln centre - With blizzards just starting to hit, it was an early start for the original&Mineral creative team. "Cesar always works with beautiful, interesting fabrics so we first thought about how we could translate that into the hair. A pop of colour definitely isn’t going anywhere, so rather than approaching this trend with the typical ombre style (which I think is kind of done), we’ve opted for stencilling,” says Janelle.

What was really  exciting was using O&M prototype products to create the "pop" (watch this space! I hope I haven't said too much). Janelle found stencils with similar pattern to the clothes and we (the royal we) used top-secret products then set them with O&M Original Queenie. This was my favourite look over the week. I was super excited to be there and see something truly original emerge on the hair scene.

Next at Wes Gordon, “Wes wanted the beauty theme to emulate a Park Avenue meets London after-hours party,” says Janelle. “We had a lot of fun coming up with the final look and really enjoyed working with Wes Gordon and his team. He is a true artist with a unique vision for fabrics and shapes.”

Ultimately I learned that while I loved every moment of the experience of #NYFW #MBFW it's not the kind of hairdressing I want to do all the time. I enjoyed my taste of the "Big Apple" but it taught me that I love the creative steady work of my two salons. I love bringing back the inspiration from the pressure filled fashion shows, pushing the envelope for how amazing hairdressing can be for my clients and team. The lifestyle is not something I now crave, which was a surprise. I used to think I was crazier, however the 10 days in New York showed me I couldn't work like this all the time. Alan and I travelled close to 24 hours to land in New York,  jet lagged but ready to go out on the town. We woke up the next day for our first show jet-lagged and a little slow. We worked hard and then went out again. NOW REPEAT and repeat and repeat. This is what happens at #NYFW #MBFW. It was a crazy, non-stop rush. I don't want to do this all the time. I need the peace and energy surfing gives me, and the stability and love of my family but, man it was fun!

The Company O&M is amazing- Not only the way they work, and the great products they produce but the way their whole culture has been created. Jose and the lunitics is really something I'm so pleased to be part of.

End note: What are all these letters and hashtags about? #NYFW (stands for New York Fashion Week) #MBFW (stands for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week) They relate to what people are saying on Twitter and photographing on Instagram. These social media platforms are some of the best ways to see pics, posts and blogs of people around and in one of the craziest fashion events in the world. They are also great ways to share your creativity and promote your business as a hairdresser.

New Year, New Hair?

A new year has so much potential, don't you think? It's new and shiny and full of promise and resolutions. If last year wasn't so great you can put it aside, forget it, and move on.  If you had a great 2012 well you have a great base to build from. The new year is a time of reflection and navel gazing and a way to reinvent yourself. It's time to look forward.

A great way to start the new year is by changing up your hair. Here are some great examples from our amazing clients to get you inspired!

New Colour?

A new colour can completely change the look and feel of your hair. Check out this amazing colour change. Beach babe blonde to pretty brunette. Gorgeous!

Or what about something, well...a little less natural but no less fab! Some bright colour for summer could be just what you need after the crazy Christmas season.

New cut?

Sydney's summer is hot and humid. Maybe it's time to trim your hair up a little shorter? It will be easier to look after in the hot weather and you will feel like a new you. How fresh and current do these bob's look?

Crop it short?

How great would this feel for summer? And so easy to look after. This summery cut and colour is just what is required on a hot, humid day!

What about the boys?

Neat and trim is what it's all about here. Suave even!

We love doing new things and changing up our clients hair. If you need a new do, come in and see us!

New Years Resolution? Be Good to Your Hair!

Rush, rush, rush, rush...

Busy, busy, busy, busy...

Stress, stress, stress, stress....

Eat, eat, eat, eat....

Merry, merry, merry, merry...

Ah.....phew! Holidays. Sigh.

There is a reason Christmas is called the silly season. So many people to see, parties to go to, presents to buy, food to eat and tequila to drink. Oh wait. The tequila bit is me!

Anyway, I reckon that by the time we get to the wonderful summer holiday between Christmas and New Year and beyond we are all a bit frazzled. Including our hair! So to start off 2013 on the right follicle (hairdresser joke), here are 3 ways to rescue your hair so you look great in 2013.

1. Go Natural

When you are tired and want something natural that works, coconut oil is for you. It's summery and smells great. Evenly distribute about a teaspoon through your hair if it's short, or a tablespoon if longer. Use your hands to warm the oil and spread the most through the tips of your hair where it's driest. Use a Tangle Teaser to comb the oil through evenly. I prefer the "cool Britannia" design myself. We sell them in all sorts of designs if you need one! Great for getting the tangles out of wet hair from the beach or pool!

Tangle Teezer Compact Styler - Cool Britannia

You could drink the water from the coconut (hydrate) use the flesh in a blender with 1 avocado flesh mix together really well - mix to a paste add this to washed hair. Either cover your hair with a shower cap or warm towel, or if it's hot and humid just twist it up into a bun. After an hour or so rinse and shampoo and condition with a gentle and moisturising product like O&M's Hydrate & Conquer

Beautiful.

2. Go Intense

3. Go SalonHolidays are really for fun in the sun. I love that about Australia. The beach, the pool....I swim or surf everyday and I'm sure many of you will too, and your hair will not be thanking you for it! Salt water and Chlorine can play havoc with your hair. Dry, brittle, not smelling great? What about your scalp? Full of sea and sand? Now i do love this, but its not great for entertaining, so first shampoo with the minty smelling Original Detox.  It won't do anything for your poor alcohol addled body, but it will do great things for your hair, removing chlorine, sand and salt. Ahh....the Australian river Mint oil in this product will also sooth any sunburn on your scalp or body. Follow up with Seven Day Miracle, a leave in intensive treatment. If things are really bad you could leave this treatment in overnight and rinse out in the morning!

If your "in-home" treatments are just not cutting it, you better come and see us in Glebe or Bondi. If you hair is in dire straits we can help with a good trim, some glossy colour and perhaps a treatment fit for a Royal? Our most intensive is the "Regal". A course of treatments over 7-10 days will have you looking great after your holidays and ready for the rest of the year!

Christmas Inspiration: where Gypsies meet fashion

If you love the Lifestyle channel then I bet you have seen Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. It’s one of lifestyles most popular shows, and I can see why.  The British documentary gives us a peak into a life so far removed from what most of us experience that it’s fascinating.  Apart from giving us into an insight into this travelling community and their history of religious and cultural traditions, it’s the wedding dresses, the make-up, the nails, and the hair that add up to being as Over-The-Top as possible. Big, bold, brash, colourful. It’s a fantasy of princess-like proportions. Every little girls’ (and maybe a few drag star’s) dream. The nails are long and fake. The fashion is tizzy, sparkly, frou-frou princess. It’s fabulous in a Barbie doll kind of way.

But can we take inspiration from this? I’m not going to suggest that we should all get out there and be as big and brash as possible, because let’s face it, who has the time (or the budget for all that product!) but could we be inspired to take a little glam and a little sparkle into our day? A big Gypsy yes!

So can you take a little Gypsy style and work it into the silly season? Of course! The trick is to take a style that many of us would think is ridiculous and translate it to cool. And this is a great time of year to try it out.

Here are my top 5 tips to add some Gypsy magic to the Christmas season!

  1. Just take one piece of inspiration: The reason the Gypsy look is so over the top is because there is a lot, ok a massive amount of things going on, that all compete for attention. Coco Chanel famously said “Before leaving the house, a lady should stop, look in the mirror, and remove one piece of jewellery.” The Gypsy mantra would be the opposite, plus some. You can pare back the Gypsy style and just take one part of the look. Say you want to rock the Gypsy big hair. Big hair can be fabulous and a cool, cool fashion statement. But tone down everything else. Keep your make-up simple and your fashion a little more subdued. Let the fake tan fade, shorten the nails and paint them a natural pink hue. A make-under.

Source: la-la-la-bonne-vie.tumblr.com via Lauren on pinterest

2. Inject some colour: Your classic Gypsy is just not seen in black. Hot pink? Yes. White satin? Yes. Some fluro with sequins? Yes.Our big cities are flooded with corporate black clothes. Bor-ring. Christmas is the time to grab some new fashion brights. Some fluro or metallic shoes, bright blue coloured jeans, a fuchsia tank top or a tangerine cardy. Maybe some bright yellow tights with that black work skirt, or a brightly coloured scarf with a classic white shirt?

3. Get some sparkle. OK, you might look (and feel) a little silly boarding public transport for your daily commute in a tiara, but a smoothed out ponytail, using a little Original Queenie  to tidy any strays, and adding a crystal encrusted hair clip for the after work chrissy cocktails, is sophisticated.

Source: ustrendy.com via Alex on Pinterest

A weekend dinner in your black tuxedo style jacket with a crystal brooch would be stunning. A crystal or diamond set watch can be worn day in, day out for a little Gypsy bling.

4. Extend it: Gypsy hair is about big and long, but long hair needs regular love and care and just not that practical for all of us every day. If you don’t have long tresses why not try a hair piece or have extensions put in? For a special occasion a well matched hair piece can give your hair added thickness and bounce or if you would love to have longer hair for longer, extensions could be for you. Salon applied hair extensions, if well looked after, can look and feel great. They give you flexibility to have long hair instantly. In a couple of hours (instead of a couple of years) you can have hair halfway down your back.

At Stevie English hair we can help you get long tresses for all your parties. We use show pony hair extensions which are the best in the business.

5. Get polished: The Gypsy style is about being “polished” and put-together all the time. If you lead a busy life it’s hard to find the time for all the “Gypsy” maintenance. I know when my clients leave my salon they feel fantastic. Nothing better than having your hair professionally done and many clients book in advance to look forward to their regular hair maintenance. But how good would it feel to have other parts of you also look fabulous? You might not like the acrylic long talons of the Gypsies but you can keep your hands and feet looking neat with a fortnightly mani-pedi. What about nourishing the body and soul with a massage once a month? How about an hour’s walk on Sunday afternoon to clear your mind and oxygenate your body, to prepare you for the week ahead? What about spending Saturday afternoon in your favourite department store trying some new make-up looks?

I think Gypsy style is the perfect place to grab some glam inspiration for Christmas. Big Fat Gypsy Wedding reminds us that hair and fashion shouldn’t be serious and that we all need some colour, sparkle and fun in our lives!

Curly Hair Discrimination!

So last week this article appeared in SMH. Titled "Curls: shabby or sexy?" it argues that curls are not welcome in the office because they are shabby. Sexy didn't get a look in. Yes you heard it. Curls! Hair that can range from a slight wave to a ringlet, to a tight spiral. Really? Apparently curls in the corporate world are less acceptable than red hair! And what's wrong with red hair? Seriously? I was incredulous! Amazed! Appalled even! I find it hard to believe that a proportion of people with some body and waves in their hair are somehow hiding themselves as they enter the world of desks, cubicles, offices, photocopies, printers and water coolers...I mean really. It's ridiculous. Isn't it? Please someone tell me it is! Surely in 2012, organisations are more concerned about people bringing their best "self" and delivering on expectations rather than whether they have curly hair or not? As long as man and women are adequately groomed and devoid of body odour, surely job performance is more important?

Of particular concern in this article was the inference that no corporate man – a CEO, a director, a financial controller – is seen with with curly hair. Hello!! Have you met Mark Bouris? He is an Australian businessman who is best known as the founder and chairman of 'Wizard Home Loans', Australia's second largest non-bank mortgage lender behind Aussie Home Loans! And he is on the tele, in the Australian version of The Apprentice. He seems to have a few waves on top.

The conclusion of the article was that if you are some sort of creative type you can flaunt your fuzzy mane to your hearts content, however if you clip on a security tag, enter a city high-rise and don a suit, you better be prepared to hide your head. According to Natasha Hughes, it's a curl free zone people.

It got me thinking. Are curly-heads discriminated in other ways? I got researching....

I found this article, that asks is curly hair intimidating on a women? Is a wild, untamed curly hairstyle, a statement of personality? And then this article which alleges that a newsreader was forced to leave her job because of the pressure of the criticism targeted at her scruffy, curly hair! Natasha Hughes wrote back in June this year about Rebekah Brooks "wild mane of red hair" when she appeared in court over the Murdoch phone hacking drama, reporting media labels of ''distracting'' and ''boho'' in relation to her red curls, inferring those with curly hair are suspicious!

Enough with this curly hair craziness! Enough!

Curly hair can be fabulous, crazy, beautiful, amazing, and luxurious!! Don't you think? Many of my curly hair clients have struggled to come to terms with their mop as they were growing up, because it does need some extra TLC. The secret to curly hair is hydration, curly is  loads drier and  far more unruly than having straight hair <Pro Tip: use Seven Day Miracle from O&M>. Curly hair can have the tendency to look a little lack lustre because the hair shaft needs some encouragement to lay flat and reflect the light, but some good product and a little encouragement it can look as shiny and healthy as the next head of hair.

In response to whether curly hair is shabby or sexy, I say sexy! And it can look great in the office too. Below is some curly inspiration, specially chosen for the office! And in response to Melbourne stylist Kristianna Michaelides, quoted in Curly Hair: shabby or sexy  who said"Hairdressers are frightened of curly hair so they'll just cut it off", we love curly hair at Stevie English Hair and we specialise in helping clients get their best hair to suit their lifestyle, including those lucky enough to have beautiful curls. We can help you chose the best products to keep your waves under control, cut it for the most flattering look and show you how to style it to look it's best whether you work in an office or not!

Melbourne Cup Hair Inspiration: Glebe and Bondi

Ladies and Gents Melbourne Cup is upon us! The day when around the nation we frock-up, get suited and hang together watching multimillion dollar horses gallop around a paddock topped with multi coloured jockeys. Makes me feel like I'm in the old country and of the elegance and tradition of Royal Ascot in June each year! Official Hospitality at Ascot Racecourse

While there are many other races during the Spring racing carnival, it's Melbourne Cup that stops the nation and is beamed around the world. While Victorians will be enjoying a public holiday in the name of a race, how come we don't get a public holiday in NSW when the Swannies win? (although traditionally hairdressers take the day day off to party so im not complaining)  Most of you will either be trotting off to work to perhaps enjoy some cheap bubbles in a paper cup at around 3pm, or the lucky ones will be skiving off to enjoy a special lunch. Wherever you will be, you will most likely be dressing up and the crowing glory of any race-day outfit would have to be what is worn atop: your hair and your hat or fascinator of choice. That's all very well but how do you style your hair to ensure your head-wear looks the best and stays put through a day of drinking bubbles and edging on your favourite filly! Here's my top tips!

Glamour waves

If you have some length to your hair and a Fascinator or small hat like appears above, this is a glamorous and romantic look. Start by spraying the shaft of your hair with some O&M Atonic, to protect it from heat and add body and shine, Wrap even sections of hair (2-3 cm pieces) around a medium-barrel curling iron like  H2D  for 30 to 45 seconds and hold the tips to keep it curled around the barrel. Repeat this around the entire head. Run your fingers through the curls to create waves and finish with a little O&M Original Queenie to keep your waves looking good through the day. Add your Fascinator or Hat and you're ready to go!

Sleek Side-part Low bun

The Stunning Aussie Nicole Kidman appeared as part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Derby Day (Saturday 3 November) in Melbourne wearing the customary black and white, a tradition for Derby Day and channelling English lass Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady. It was an immaculate hair style topped off by a striking hat. If you want to take inspiration from your Nic, here's how: You will need at least shoulder length hair for this style and a hair band and a number of bobby pins, matched to your hair colour. Part your hair deeply to one side and pull your hair firmly around to the nape of your neck. Secure with a hair band. Twist around the ponytail on itself to create bun and secure with as many bobby pins as needed. Smooth through some O&M Fizzy Logic to smooth any flyaway hairs and to add shine. A fine spray of O&M Original Queenie will fix the bun before adding your fabulous hat!

Short Hair Styles

For everyday, short hair can look striking and polished with not too much work, but what if you want to wear a hat or fascinator for a race day event? First you could go smooth and no fuss and make the hat or fasinator the real star, like the woman in the middle below! Her hair is there to provide a base to the height and colourful arrangement on her head!

Another way to wear your short hair with a hat or fascinator, is to smooth and slick your hair close to your hair, like Carey Mulligan below:

This could be achieved by adding some O&M Rootalicious to your roots, blow-drying your hair back with a paddle brush, adding a little O&M Frizzy Logic to smooth it out and finish with some O&M Original Queenie to keep the style in place and help your hat or fascinator stay on. I reckon a simple hat perched on an angle or a simple feathery fascinator would top this style off perfectly!

Best of luck on Melbourne Cup Day and please send me your tips!!

Men's Hair Trend Inspirations: Bondi and Glebe

The man was a legend. Most famously known as the lead singer of The Doors, he extended his creativity to poetry, song-writing and film directing. He was magnetic, charismatic and what about that hair? Thick, curly and wild. No wonder all the chicks wanted him. A Bad boy with all that hair.

We want to help all our amazing male clients have the hair that suits their personality and lifestyle, so here are 2 key men's trends of the moment:

1. Colour for the Lad's

We don't reserve "all the colours of the rainbow" just for the girls. We are seeing lots of guys wanting to express themselves with strong colour and cuts. Maybe having the all-round nice guy Joel Madden (married to the truly gorgeous Nicole Ritchie) in Sydney this year for The Voice inspired guys to be a little more creative with their crowning glory? While Joel was here he sported many looks with lots of colour:

2. Mad Men

This late 50's early 60's drama depicting the Madison Avenue Advertising industry has spurned trends in interiors, fashion and of course hair. There is the clean cut, slicked back clean shaven look shown here on Don Drapper. A neat cut teamed with a little Frizzy Logic and a little K-Gravel is all you need.

Check out the Stevie English take on the Mad Men style. A close clip above the ear and around the face, a tidy side shave and a hint of facial hair. So cool.
