The Honest Guide to Going from Dark to Light

Let's get one thing out of the way upfront: going from dark to blonde in a single appointment is almost always a bad idea. We know that's not what the internet tells you. We know your mate did it somewhere and it looked fine for about three weeks. We're telling you anyway.

Here's what actually happens, and how to do it properly.

Why dark hair doesn't just lift to blonde

Dark hair — whether it's natural or coloured — has a high concentration of melanin in the cortex imagine lots of coffee beans. Lightener breaks that melanin down, but it doesn't do it all at once. It moves through a series of stages: black to brown, brown to red, red to orange, orange to yellow, yellow to pale yellow. Every head of hair has to pass through those stages. You can't skip them unfortunately.

What you can do is control how far you lift in a single session, how much stress you put the hair under, and how you manage the stages over time.

What "going in stages" actually means

For most people starting from dark brown or black — natural or coloured — getting to a true blonde is a multi-appointment process. The first session might get you to a warm auburn or copper. The second lifts you to a brighter, lighter base. The third gets you to where you actually want to be.

That's not us being overly cautious. That's us not destroying your hair.

Each lift session stresses the protein structure of the hair. Going too hard, too fast, in a single sitting risks breaking that structure — and broken hair doesn't lift, it snaps. Doing it in controlled stages, with bond-building support between appointments, gets you to the same destination with hair you can actually enjoy when you get there.

We do want to give you your dream colour! promise . But we want your hair to be healthy too!

The colour history problem

If your hair has been coloured — box dye especially — that's an extra variable. Box dyes often contain metallic salts or high-deposit pigments that sit in the cortex differently to professional colour. They can lift unevenly, turn unexpected shades, or resist lifting altogether in patches.

This is why we do a consultation before any major lightening service. We need to know what's been on your hair, not just what it looks like now.

What you should expect going in

  • More than one appointment if you're starting dark

  • A consultation first — always it’s free!

  • Some warmth in the early stages — that's normal, not a mistake

  • Bond-building treatments and peptides built into the service, not bolted on as an afterthought

  • Honest timelines — we'd rather tell you it takes three visits than have you leave unhappy after one

What we won't do

Rush it. We've been doing this since 2007. We hold multiple Australian Colourist of the Year titles. We were named AHIA Salon Team of the Year in 2026. None of that happened by cutting corners on the hard services.

If someone's quoting you a full dark-to-blonde transformation in one session at a price that seems too good — it probably is.

Come in. Let's talk about your hair, your timeline, and what's actually achievable. That conversation is free.
