What Actually Happens When We Lighten Your Hair
People sit in the chair and say "I want to go blonde" like it's a single step. It's not. And understanding what's actually happening inside the hair shaft is the difference between a result that lasts and one that falls apart before you're back for your next appointment.
Hair is basically a protein structure
Boring I know , but its important
.Your hair is made up of keratin — a fibrous protein — bound together by something called the cortex. That cortex is where your natural pigment (melanin) lives. When we apply a lightener, we're not just stripping colour off the outside. We're going in.
Powder lightener, mixed with a developer, creates an oxidative reaction. That reaction breaks down melanin molecules inside the cortex — lifting pigment out of the hair. The higher the developer, the faster and more aggressively it works. Fast isn't always better. Slow and steady wins the race remember!
Why technique matters more than product
The same lightener can give two completely different results on two different clients. Porosity, previous colour history, hair thickness, starting point, ie your natural colour , scalp heat — all of it changes the equation. A head of virgin hair lifts differently to one that's been coloured for ten years. Fine hair processes faster than coarse. Hair near the scalp (where the heat from your head accelerates processing) lifts faster than the mid-lengths.
This is why there's no such thing as a one-size application. On-scalp vs off-scalp, foils vs balayage, processing times, developer strength — these are all variables we're reading and adjusting in real time.
The damage conversation
Lightening weakens the hair's internal bond structure. That's just chemistry. The keratin chains that give hair its strength and elasticity take a hit every time you lift. Which is why what happens after the lightener comes off matters as much as the lift itself.
At Stevie English Hair, we use K18 and Olaplex in our lightening services — not as an upsell, but because it's the right way to do the job. K18 is a peptide that fixes (honestly its magical shit). Bond builders work during and after the chemical process to reconnect broken disulfide bonds inside the cortex. The result is hair that lifts well and stays in good condition long enough to actually enjoy being blonde.
